ONC

I was part of the team that redesigned the ONC website from the ground up. Due to the scale of this project, this item consists of multiple case studies.

What is ONC

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) leads federal efforts to advance the adoption of health IT and technology. This includes healthcare artificial intelligence (AI).

My Role

I was hired as the senior UX designer role on this multi-year and multi-site website. the website consists of over 280+ pages. I lead the charge in creating a design system consisting of 80+ blocks. I was also responsible in laying out 100+ pages in WordPress.

A Bold Refresh Incorporating Modern Techniques

Updated Homepage Design

The site was updated from a Drupal site to a WordPress site. Taking advantage of the block design tools as well as the custom post types for news, resources, leadership profiles, events, blogs, and more.

Subtle animations are incorporated to engage the user.

Multiple areas linking out to topic and subtopic pages, news and updates, resources, and more.

A scroll-jacking section for the “Spotlight Topics” where a user can learn more about topics.

Outdated Design Patterns

Old Home Page

The old home page used an outdated design using two columns reserving most space to display a list of news and updates.

Deep Dive into Custom Block Design

80+ Custom Blocks with Variants

The site was built on a foundation of the USWDS system but that didn’t fully suit our needs so I worked on creating more than 80 additional blocks to fill a variety of different layout needs. The image below depicts a small sample of all of the blocks.

80+ blocks used with integration from Gutenberg Block Editor.

Meticulously tested and refined with iterative sprints of edits.

All blocks were designed with responsive layout in mind.
